PT Freeport Indonesia Repatriated 167 Turtles to Native Habitat

By: 3BL Media

SOURCE: Freeport-McMoRan

DESCRIPTION:

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Environmental Department helped return to the wild 167 native pig-snouted turtles from the West Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA).

The pig-snouted turtles, or Carettochelys insculpta, are a protected species and were confiscated by the BKSDA as trafficked wildlife. The turtles were inspected for health conditions and were kept in quarantine by the PT Freeport Indonesia Environmental Department prior to release into their original habitat. Fauna endemic to Papua is continuously and consistently monitored and protected.
