Mildred Muhammad Returns to Fort Stewart and Fort Hunter, GA, to Address Rising Domestic Violence in Military Families
Acclaimed Domestic Violence advocate leads workshops for military communities, empowering victim service providers and survivors alike.

On September 16-17, 2024, acclaimed domestic violence advocate and survivor Mildred Muhammad returned to Fort Stewart and Fort Hunter, GA, to lead essential training sessions on domestic violence awareness and self-care for military victim service providers, first responders, and military spouses. Known for her resilience as the ex-wife of the D.C. sniper, Muhammad has dedicated her life to supporting others impacted by domestic violence. Her workshops this year responded to a troubling rise in domestic violence incidents in military families since her previous visit in 2017.

A certified consultant with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime, Muhammad led workshops titled Domestic Violence Training for the Military Community and Self-Care for Victim Service Providers. These sessions focused on practical strategies for recognizing and addressing domestic violence in a military context, while emphasizing the importance of self-care for those who support survivors. Muhammad stressed that maintaining personal well-being is crucial for caregivers and advocates, helping them remain effective in their roles.

Drawing from her personal experience surviving domestic abuse, including her former husband’s actions as the D.C. Sniper, Muhammad offered insights that resonated deeply with attendees. She discussed the emotional toll domestic violence can have on military families, sharing her own journey to overcome trauma. Her story illustrated the strength required to move beyond abuse and the critical role of support for survivors.

After her presentations, many attendees approached Muhammad privately to discuss their own experiences with domestic violence. Her willingness to connect personally and openly share her story provided attendees with hope and valuable insights, creating a safe environment for those navigating difficult family dynamics.

Beyond her in-person training, Muhammad extends her mission through her podcast, Rising Above It All with Mildred Muhammad, where she shares empowering stories and practical guidance for survivors and those who support them. Recently appointed by Maryland Governor Wes Moore to the State Board of Victim Services, Muhammad continues to broaden her reach and influence in the fight for domestic violence awareness and survivor support.
