Local Financial Advisor Richard Smith Remembers Historic Game

On November 16th, 2019, Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland played the 61st Cortaca Jug Game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. With a record-breaking crowd of 45,161 fans, Richard Smith recalls this exciting moment in football history and details the undisputed rivalry between two nationally-ranked teams

GLENS FALLS, NY / ACCESSWIRE / July 28, 2021 / The Cortaca Jug is an annual college football game played between the Red Dragons of the State University at Cortland and the Bombers of Ithaca College. Often referred to as one of the most prominent rivalries in Division III football, the night of November 16th, 2019 made history when Ithaca defeated Cortland 32-20 in front of a crowd of 45, 161 fans. The 61st Cortaca Jug Game was the fifth-highest attended college football game at MetLife Stadium.

Local financial advisor Richard Smith recalls how "The biggest little game" in college football gained its infamous reputation.

'I was the former defensive captain and three-time All-American for Ithaca College in 1988' states Richard.' I remember going to the second last game of the season against Cortland State with both teams being undefeated and both in contention to win the National Championship. There was extensive press coverage and the excitement was at an all time high. Despite a rivalry that had started thirty years earlier, it was really the 1988 game that put it on the map. Ithaca ended up loosing that game 21-20, but defeated Cortland at home three weeks later in the NCAA playoffs and eventually winning the Division III National Championship.'

The two individuals responsible for this historical game in MetLife stadium were Richard Smith's former teammates and college roommates Marc Hudak and Bob Garone. Hudak was the Offensive Captain in 1988, and according to Smith, "They drove the bus on making this happen." Although it is uncommon for a Division III school to play in such a high-profile venue, Smith anticipates an even bigger turnout in 2022 when the Cortaca Jug will be played in Yankee Stadium.
