AM Best Announces James A. Gillard Jr. as President of A.M. Best Rating Services, Inc., Succeeding Matthew C. Mosher

AM Best has announced that James A. Gillard Jr. will succeed Matthew C. Mosher as president of A.M. Best Rating Services, Inc. (AMBRS), effective Sept. 30, 2024. Mosher is retiring as president and CEO of AMBRS, effective at the end of the year.

Gillard most recently served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of AMBRS. He joined AM Best in 2008 and spent nearly the past decade leading the enhancements of AM Best’s rating methodology and rating tools. Gillard is a Gettysburg College graduate with a master’s in economics from Johns Hopkins University and an MBA from Temple University with a concentration in finance.

“As we transition to the next chapter, I have great confidence in the strength of our team as AM Best meets head-on the current challenges of increased regulation of credit rating agencies while recognizing the need for innovation amid an evolving insurance market. Under Jim’s leadership, I believe the organization is well-positioned for continued success,” said Arthur Snyder III, chairman, president and CEO of A.M. Best Company, Inc.

Mosher joined AM Best in 1995 as a senior financial analyst and actuary and moved quickly into positions of increasing responsibility. He became an officer of the Company in 2000 when he moved to vice president of AMBRS’ specialty lines group in its property/casualty rating division. In 2019, Mosher assumed the role of president and CEO of AMBRS, overseeing the life/health, property/casualty and international rating divisions.

“On behalf of AM Best, we are grateful to Matt for his dedicated leadership for nearly three decades,” Snyder said. “During his tenure, the insurance industry has undergone enormous changes, and Matt played a significant role in navigating AM Best through those market turns. We congratulate him on a well-deserved retirement.”

As part of the transition of responsibilities, Mosher will assume the role of executive director of AMBRS for the remainder of the year. He will remain chair and/or CEO of AM Best’s other affiliates until further notice, i.e., A.M. Best Europe Rating Services Ltd.; A.M. Best Asia-Pacific Limited; A.M. Best Asia-Pacific (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.; A.M. Best (EU) Rating Services B.V.; A.M. Best América Latina S.A. de C.V.; AM Best Europe Information Services Limited.
