A Debuts Historical Fiction That Chronicles The Extraordinary Life Of Joachim Wedekind zur Horst

Spicer Owens is a retired IT professional and a first-time author who is proud to present her captivating historical fiction novel Achim's Story.

The book chronicles the extraordinary early life of Joachim Wedekind zur Horst, Owens' late stepfather, against the backdrop of pre-WWII Germany and the harrowing events surrounding it.

“Achim's Story” opens with Joachim's idyllic childhood. Born into an affluent German family, Achim's reality is quickly disrupted by a strained relationship with his mother and a life-altering secret he discovers as Nazi Germany rises to power. Driven by an unwavering dream, Joachim defies his father's wishes and sets sail on merchant ships, thrusting him into the heart of WWII.

Owens' vivid storytelling brings to life Joachim's extraordinary experiences at sea, including receiving the Iron Cross from Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. The narrative takes a harrowing turn as Joachim finds himself among the few survivors of the Steuben sinking, a maritime disaster in the Baltic Sea that claimed over 4,500 lives, considered one of the worst in history.

“Achim's Story” transcends the battlefield, exploring the profound impact of war on an individual level. It delves into themes of love, loss, loyalty, betrayal, and the enduring power of the human spirit. The story follows Joachim's journey of resilience as he navigates a Danish refugee camp and rebuilds his life in the United States.

Joachim was a captivating storyteller. His experiences during WWII and his unwavering spirit in the face of immense adversity inspired Bettina to share his inspiring story with the world.
