NEMA ratings were invented by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association and are a standardized way of describing the protective qualities of electrical enclosures. There are 14 ratings with various features. With the new guide, Electrical Power and Control wants to help readers choose an enclosure with the right rating so that they don’t pay for unnecessary protection and don’t compromise on safety.

“Understanding what a NEMA rating is helps you make informed decisions when selecting an enclosure, ensuring it meets your specific needs. For example, a NEMA 3R rating means the enclosure is suitable for outdoor use, protecting against rain and snow, while a NEMA 4X rating provides additional protection against corrosion, ideal for harsh environments,” a company spokesperson explained.

The basics of NEMA ratings is to understand that 3, 4, 6 etc., are made for outdoor use, whereas 1, 2, 5, and up are made for indoor applications.

For outdoor enclosures, NEMA 3 is the basic rating that can withstand rain, sleet, snow, and windblown dust and is sufficient for most industrial applications in areas that don’t experience severe conditions. There are also NEMA 3X, 3S, and 3R for ice, corrosion, and water accumulation protection.

NEMA 4 ratings provide robust outdoor protection, but the most advanced protection is the NEMA 6P, made for underwater installations and areas with high flooding risks.

The team at Electrical Power and Control helps businesses pick out the right enclosure for their needs.

A client shared their review: "10/10 recommend using their services! Electrical Power and Control has definitely helped us prevent long delays in projects, which really helped out our customers! Will continue to use them for situations we run into!"
