NFL FLAG NEW MEXICO Redefines Flag Football for Albuquerque’s Youth

Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States - 09-28-2022 (PR Distribution™) -

2022 has been quite the year for NFL FLAG NEW MEXICO as the youth flag football league has taken Albuquerque by storm. The organization is celebrating win after win in its first year of operations, becoming the largest flag football league in the Albuquerque metro area with over 1300 participants spanning their inaugural three seasons, and joining the ranks as the first youth football league to ever be part of Albuquerque’s Chamber of Commerce. The most notable accolade so far: Winning the award for the 2022 NFL FLAG Rookie Organization of the Year, out of all NFL FLAG leagues in North America.

“After coaching six different teams, we saw the need for something different for the youth of Albuquerque. In 2021, we founded our own league on the principle of a positive experience, where all races, genders, creeds, financial status – everybody – is welcomed with open arms,” says owners Owen and Alicia Pena. “With the official NFL shield backing our league, we showcase legitimate and serious representation while fostering a community of growth, inclusivity, and confidence on a broader scale for the youth of New Mexico.”

This impact is not only felt by the youth of the program but by their coaches as well. All coaches are volunteers, working weekday jobs before coaching their respective divisions. From enforcing the code of conduct to giving coaches a say-so in decision-making, there is 100% dedication. Albuquerque’s high school students also feel the ripple effect by reffing for the league and learning valuable skills in a controlled environment outside of the classroom.

In the midst of the pandemic, NFL FLAG NEW MEXICO stays forward-thinking, already planning to initiate an all-girls league within their divisions to cultivate comfort and representation within the sport. Moving forward, the league aims to bring in new teams from Native American reservations in the greater Albuquerque region and has already assisted a fellow league owner with opening a new league in Las Cruces. These efforts are all made to bring awareness to the award-winning program outside of Albuquerque’s city limits.

At the league’s core, owners Owen and Alicia Pena strive to create a community that is supported and standard-setting for their volunteer coaches and referees, families, and most importantly, New Mexico’s youth. NFL FLAG NEW MEXICO Spring 2023 registration opens online on December 1st, 2022.
