Mommy Makeover Myths: Richmond Plastic Surgeon Debunks 5 Common Misconceptions

Richmond, Virginia, United States - 01-18-2023 (PR Distribution™) -

To help those interested in mommy makeover surgery understand whether the procedure is right for them, Dr. Neil J. Zemmel reveals the truth behind five common myths.

Richmond, VA – A mommy makeover is a comprehensive treatment plan that incorporates two or more procedures to restore a woman’s pre-pregnancy figure, explains Richmond plastic surgeon Neil J. Zemmel, MD, FACS. At his private practice, Richmond Aesthetic Surgery, Dr. Zemmel performs a wide range of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, and mommy makeover surgery is a popular offering among his patients. Since the surgery can often be more complex — due to combining multiple procedures under one plan — the board-certified plastic surgeon says patients should have a good understanding of what to expect to help them prepare for their procedures and recovery.

To help debunk misconceptions about mommy makeover surgery, Dr. Zemmel highlights five common myths, revealing the truth behind each one.

Myth #1: Mommy makeover surgery should be performed soon after having children.

Truth: Mommy makeover surgery can offer numerous benefits despite how much time has passed since a woman has had children. Dr. Zemmel has performed mommy makeover surgery for women within a year after they have given birth, as well as for others decades after having children. The ideal timing for surgery depends on many factors, including a patient’s weight, their family planning, and general readiness.

Myth #2: The mommy makeover is a shortcut for those who do not have time for diet and exercise.

Truth: A mommy makeover addresses body changes that do not respond to diet, exercise, or other lifestyle changes. Concerns like stretched abdominal muscles, isolated fat pockets, loss of breast volume, and lax tissue typically require surgery to significantly improve. The decision to undergo a mommy makeover is very personal, and Dr. Zemmel has found it can dramatically improve a mother’s self-confidence as many qualities of their pre-baby body are restored.

Myth #3: Tummy tuck surgery is the main purpose of a mommy makeover.

Truth: While a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is one of the most common procedures included in a mommy makeover, a variety of other options can be included in addition to or instead of a tummy tuck, depending on the patient’s needs. Other procedures often incorporated into a mommy makeover include liposuction, breast lift surgery, breast augmentation, facial rejuvenation, and more.

Myth #4: If a patient gets mommy makeover surgery, they cannot have any more children.

Truth: While it is recommended to wait to get a mommy makeover until after a woman has completed her family — as to avoid compromising her results — the surgery does not prevent the ability to get pregnant in the future. Dr. Zemmel recognizes that some individuals may decide later that they wish to have more children, and should this occur, he says repeat procedures can be performed to touch up results as needed.

Myth #5: The recovery from mommy makeover surgery is a long, grueling process.

Truth: Dr. Zemmel advises patients rest for at least two weeks after their mommy makeover, before resuming normal activities such as routine housework. While this can be difficult for mothers, he says the initial rest helps improve results and shorten the overall recovery. For those with young children, Dr. Zemmel recommends arranging for help in the initial recovery, as patients should avoid lifting over five pounds at first. He explains that the extent of a patient’s recovery will depend on the extent of their surgical needs, but in most cases, patients can return to their daily routine within two to six weeks, during which time discomfort is typically well-managed with pain medication.

Mothers tend to make many sacrifices in their life, notes Dr. Zemmel, which is why he is passionate about helping these women enhance their natural beauty and, at the same time, their sense of self. He advises anyone considering a mommy makeover to consult with a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery to learn whether the procedure, or collection of procedures, is right for them.
