TSA Reports Rise in Airport Security Breaches in the Last Year

Recent reports reveal concerning gaps in airport security. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has documented over 300 security breaches since March 2023. Notable breaches include rushed travelers bypassing security and a ticketless woman flying undetected to Los Angeles. The private security service Clear Secure, Inc. (NYSE:YOU) has also been under scrutiny after a series of breaches. One individual used a discarded boarding pass to get through Clear, and another incident involved a man with ammunition in his luggage who used a fake ID to bypass Clear’s checks. These incidents coincide with TSA’s efforts to bolster security, including a $3.8 million contract with AI security company Liberty Defense Holdings (TSXV:SCAN) (OTCQB:LDDFF) for its  multi-technology security solutions for detecting concealed weapons in high-traffic areas such as airports, stadiums, and schools. Other companies like Leidos Holdings (NYSE:LDOS), Evolv Technology (NASDAQ:EVLV), and Xtract One Technologies (TSX:XTRA) (OTCQX:XTRAF) are also working to enhance national security by introducing contactless security solutions to both private and public settings.

Liberty Defense Holdings (TSXV:SCAN) (OTCQB:LDDFF) has developed advanced security solutions that can detect concealed weapons in high-traffic areas like airports, stadiums, and schools. The company’s HEXWAVE system utilizes millimeter wave, 3D imaging and AI to identify both metallic and non-metallic weapons and prohibited items. These technologies are exclusively licensed and developed in-house. In addition, Liberty is innovating aviation passenger screening with millimeter wave-based High-Definition Advanced Imaging Technology (HD-AIT) for body and shoe scanning.

On April 23, Liberty Defense announced international shipments of HEXWAVE™ to the Subic Bay Airport in the Philippines and to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Benefitting from a robust international distribution network, Liberty has established partnerships with industry leaders spanning Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. These partners, with extensive experience in security and detection, boast a global presence and have successfully deployed thousands of security systems. HEXWAVE seamlessly complements their existing offerings, particularly for on-person screening requirements.

“We continue to see an increase in demand from the international community requiring next generation on person screening,” said Bill Frain, CEO of Liberty Defense. “It was critical for us to partner with companies that have the installed base to provide additional sales and service support to the international market. Unfortunately, we continue to see terrorist activities in all forms across the globe and our goal is to be a part of the security solution to protect our communities”

Liberty Defense has already made sales in Europe and Asia, with more international deals coming down the pipeline thanks to the company’s robust international distribution network, which is facilitated by two prominent partners in the security and detection industry.

Tech Companies Secure Major Contracts and Partnerships Across Various Industries

Leidos Holdings (NYSE:LDOS) has secured a follow-on prime contract with the US Army, valued at up to $267 million over 11 months. The contract covers hardware sustainment, modernization, training, and logistics support under the Responsive Strategic Sourcing for Services (RS3) program. Leidos will leverage its expertise in C5ISR to assess Army hardware capabilities, implement upgrades, and manage equipment logistics. This task order, awarded by Army Contracting Command-Aberdeen Proving Ground, supports various Army divisions. Since February 2011, Leidos has deployed nearly 9,000 C5ISR systems and provided over 13,000 training courses, benefiting over 167,000 soldiers.

Evolv Technology (NASDAQ:EVLV) has partnered with Dignity Health Sports Park (DHSP), home of the LA Galaxy, deploying Evolv Express® for enhanced security screening. At the Galaxy’s recent home opener, Evolv screened 27,000 fans, setting an MLS attendance record. Evolv Express expedites entry with AI and sensor tech, distinguishing threats from everyday items. This quick process allows more time for concessions and shopping. MLS commissioner Don Garber praised the packed stadium. DHSP joins nine other MLS venues and various Southern California venues, like SoFi Stadium, in using Evolv’s system for improved security.

In April, threat detection and security solution provider Xtract One Technologies (TSX:XTRA) (OTCQX:XTRAF) announced its SmartGateway selection to safeguard all entrances at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, TX. The venue, managed by Oak View Group, hosts concerts, sports, rodeos, and conventions in its 10,000-seat arena and 138,000-square-foot convention center. The Center aims to offer diverse, memorable experiences for visitors, including weddings and private parties.

Clear Secure (NYSE:YOU), on the other hand, is at risk of losing its ability to operate in California following a proposed ban that seeks to block Clear from operating in the state’s airports. Newman argues that Clear privileges wealthier individuals, disrupting equity in TSA lines. Clear charges $189 annually for identity verification and fast screening. Though operating in 50 airports nationwide, its presence in California may dwindle if the bill passes. Newman clarifies the bill doesn’t intend to shut Clear down but ensures its services don’t hinder others. Bipartisan support, including from Republican Sen. Janet Nguyen and flight attendants’ associations, contrasts airlines’ opposition due to operational and passenger experience worries. The bill sparks debate on convenience versus equity in air travel.

Last week, Liberty Defense Holdings Ltd. (TSXV:SCAN) (OTCQB:LDDFF) received a $1 million payment from Viken Detection, a global leader in threat detection, for 15 HEXWAVE™ systems. The order is part of a strategic agreement between the two companies that will see Viken purchase 30 units to sell into the fast-growing security screening market in the Americas.
