Father’s Day is a very special day for many families. A day to commemorate the paternal figure of the house who often sacrifices for the good of the family. It is a great day because fathers around the world get to be celebrated by their kids and families and have a great time. Today we are going to explore why we celebrate Father’s Day

Origins of father’s day

Originally, this celebration came about as an inspiration for mother’s day. They celebrated it with a Sunday sermon sponsored by a West Virginia church on July 5, 1908. This was in honour of the 362 men who had died in the December explosions in the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, which was the nation’s first event specifically honouring fathers. It was not an annual holiday, but a one-time tribute. Next year, Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman from Spokane, Washington, attempted to create an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for fathers. In order to gain support for her idea, she went to local churches, the YMCA, business owners, and government officials. And she succeeded: Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on June 19, 1910.

President Wilson commemorated Father’s Day in 1916 by pressing a button in Washington DC, to send telegraph messages to Spokane, which led to the flag being raised. Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s Day in 1924.

When is Father’s Day in 2022?

In the United States and the United Kingdom, we honour fathers on the third Sunday of June, and this year’s Father’s Day takes place on June 19.
