Virginia Woolf: Killing The Angel performance for CharityActor/singer Lucy Stevens to give benefit performance of her one-woman show ‘Virginia Woolf: Killing the Angel’ for statue campaign

LONDON, RICHMOND UPON THAMES, UK – July 5, 2022 – Versatile actor and classically trained singer Lucy Stevens will be reprising her role as Virginia Woolf  in aid of the campaign to erect a statue of the famous writer in Richmond upon Thames, a south London town where Woolf resided from 1914-1925. The one-woman play penned by Stevens is to be staged at local arts venue, The Exchange, in Twickenham, with all proceeds going to Aurora Metro, the charity raising funds for the statue. The benefit show will take place on 15th July, at 7.30pm. A post-show talk about the campaign will follow.

The play titled ‘Virginia Woolf: Killing the Angel’ is an entertaining and witty monologue with music that weaves the words of Virginia Woolf together with songs by British female composers who were her contemporaries. It reveals her troubled childhood, her views on literature, members of the Bloomsbury group and gives insight into Woolf’s ground-breaking feminist work. Pianist Elizabeth Marcus will accompany Lucy Stevens with songs which are rarely performed today by composers including Ethel Smyth, Liza Lehmann and Rebecca Clarke.

The campaign for a statue of Virginia Woolf has been running since 2017 and has reached 85% of the funds needed. The highly-praised sculpture by artist Laury Dizengremel has now been cast in bronze and will be shipped to London and stored until the day of unveiling, slated for autumn 2022. The local council unanimously voted to grant landowner permission to site the statue in the historic area of the riverside at Richmond upon Thames in 2021 and two public consultations concerning the statue were overwhelmingly in favour with the most recent showing that 88% of local residents were in favour of the project.

PAST REVIEWS OF THE PLAY

“An extraordinary evening … challenging, enlightening, entertaining, chilling, informative, alluring, beautiful, funny and deeply inspiring … like floating on top of a wave – joyous one moment and dashed onto the pebbles the next. We felt drawn into [Virginia Woolf’s] stream of consciousness – sometimes playful, sometimes heart-rending.” – Theatre Royal Winchester

“A stunning portrayal by Lucy Stevens of Virginia Woolf and the accompanying music. A truly wonderful evening.” – Dorchester Arts Corn Exchange

“Virginia Woolf: Killing the Angel is the latest collaboration between actor and classical singer, Lucy Stevens and pianist Elizabeth Marcus, a Fellow and Professor at Guildhall School of Music. Following their previous acclaimed plays about women in music: ‘Ethel Smyth: Grasp the Nettle’ and ‘Kathleen Ferrier Whattalife!’”
