TC Energy to build 81 MW solar project

Work is underway at the solar energy facility south of Calgary, with completion slated for 2023.

TC Energy Corp. said it will start pre-construction work for the 81 MW Saddlebrook Solar Project near Aldersyde, Alberta, around 40 miles south of Calgary.

The diversified energy company plans to invest C$146 million ($107 million) to build its first Canadian solar power project.

Initial construction will involve installing solar panels on TC Energy property in a local industrial park.

The project is partially supported by C$10 million from Emissions Reduction Alberta. The funding supports a hybrid solar generation facilities, which, when combined with a flow battery energy storage system, is expected to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Alberta.

TC Energy said it obtained all regulatory approvals and permits. Construction is expected to be completed in 2023. Once in operation, two people will work at the facility.

The company said it has acquired more than 400 MW of renewable power via power purchase agreements in Alberta during the past 24 months. In April, it announced plans to explore developing a 60-tonnes-per-day hydrogen production hub near Crossfield, Alberta.

TC Energy operates pipelines that supply around 25% of North America’s natural gas. It also holds a 48% interest in Canada’s Bruce nuclear power station and owns 30 natural gas storage facilities as part of the Columbia Gas Transmission Storage system.
