Manatt Continues to Expand National Trial Capabilities With Arrival of Litigation Group in Boston

Partner Justin Wolosz and Associates Kaela Athay, Max Jacobs and Nicholas Perkins join Manatt’s rapidly growing Boston office and national litigation team

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, a multidisciplinary, integrated professional services firm, today announced the addition of Trial, White Collar and Investigations Partner Justin J. Wolosz and Associates Kaela M. Athay, Max Jacobs and R. Nicholas (Nick) Perkins in Boston. The group brings impressive litigation experience within the industries in which Manatt focuses and will develop innovative strategies that help clients navigate some of the most sophisticated and novel business disputes in Massachusetts and across the nation.

“We are excited to welcome Justin, Kaela, Max and Nick as the latest additions to our rapidly growing Boston team, which has experienced significant growth this past year with the arrivals of Eric Gold, Joan Lukey and Marty Murphy,” said Manatt CEO and Managing Partner Donna L. Wilson. “Justin’s deep roots across Massachusetts and the group’s national litigation experience counseling a wide range of clients make them natural fits to our powerhouse litigation team, which has also been steadily expanding on a national scale, most recently with the arrival of Randy S. Grossman in San Diego.”

For more than two decades, Wolosz has acted as a true partner for clients—ranging from individuals to corporate executives and Fortune 500 companies—counseling them through all phases of complex disputes, from pre-litigation negotiations through litigation, trial, arbitration and appeals. His practice covers a diverse range of commercial litigation matters touching on all flavors of contract and tort claims; consumer protection violations; False Claims Act investigations and litigation; wrongful terminations; unfair competition claims; and Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act violations. He has particular experience defending clients in consumer class actions in both federal and state court, as well as large multi-district litigation matters. Additionally, he helps clients navigate complex state-court litigation before the Massachusetts Business Litigation Session and other state courts. Wolosz received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, magna cum laude, Order of the Coif, and his A.B. from the College of the Holy Cross.

“Manatt has a fantastic team of professionals in Boston with an impressive national and trial-ready litigation team that provides the ideal platform for me to join and advise my clients on business disputes, from the earliest stages of litigation prevention to representing them in the courtroom,” Wolosz said. “I also look forward to continuing to work with Kaela and Max, reuniting with Joan, who has been my colleague and friend for many years, and collaborating with Marty, Nick, Patricia Boozang, Scott Lashway, Chris Lisy and the rest of the team as they continue to provide exceptional client service in Boston and beyond.”

Athay brings experience counseling various clients in government enforcement actions and complex litigation matters, notably in the health care industry. She focuses her practice on assisting clients in evaluating potential exposure under federal statutes and in navigating various compliance issues. Athay received her J.D. from Harvard Law School, her M.S. from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and her B.A. from Brigham Young University.

Jacobs represents companies in court and arbitrations in a variety of complex commercial litigation matters. His experience spans the litigation process, from the filing of complaints, discovery, dispositive motions and requests for injunctive relief. He received his J.D. from Wake Forest University School of Law and his B.A. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Perkins has represented plaintiffs and defendants—including financial institutions, venture capital investors, private equity firms and trustees—in complex litigation in state and federal courts. His experience spans the litigation process, from the filing of complaints and requests for injunctive relief through trial and appeal. Perkins’ trial experience includes second-chairing a 12-day bench trial. Perkins joined Manatt from a clerkship with the Honorable James O. Browning, U.S. District Judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico. He received his J.D. from Boston College Law School and his M.A., first class honors, from the University of St. Andrews.

Wolosz, Athay, Jacobs and Perkins are the latest additions to Manatt’s expanding roster of legal and consulting professionals across the Firm’s core practices, including Health Care (Edo Banach, Nicholas (Nick) Bath Jr., Dr. Troyen (Troy) A. Brennan, Robert (Rob) Fraiman, Gold, Paul Irving, Tracy A. Massel, Lauren Polak, Thomas (Tom) Robertson, Shelli Silver and Julia E.
