Not Your Average Year-End Report: Grindr Unveils UNWRAPPED 2024

From sweaty hookups to viral gay gasps, Grindr’s global users reflect on a year of intimacy, connection, and pop culture dominance.

GRINDR UNWRAPPED 2024 is here, and it’s delivering the ultimate gay year-in-review. More than just a list, this annual report doesn’t just capture LGBTQ+ culture – it sets the tone for the year ahead.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20241205511204/en/

Grindr’s global user base has weighed in on the moments that matter most, diving deep into the trends and topics that defined queer life this year. Alongside global survey insights from 10,000 Grindr users worldwide, UNWRAPPED 2024 also uses anonymous, aggregated profile data to spotlight what’s on top (or on the bottom) this year.

In a year defined by BRAT Summer and the electrifying SWEAT Tour, Charli XCX and Troye Sivan reigned supreme in the hearts (and ears) of users worldwide, claiming their thrones in Grindr’s top categories and proving once again they’re more than pop stars – they’re cultural icons:

  • Mother of the Year: Charli XCX
  • Babygirl of the Year: Troye Sivan
  • Album of the Year: BRAT – Charli XCX
  • Tour of the Year: SWEAT Tour – Charli XCX + Troye Sivan
  • Ally of the Year: Charli XCX

But it wasn’t all about pop royalty and dark dance floors; Grindr UNWRAPPED also pulled back the curtain on queer relationships and intimacy too. The biggest surprise? Missionary has been crowned ‘Sex Position of the Year’ – proving that even in a chaotic world, Grindr users are longing for connection and closeness (and maybe a few legs in the air).

“Missionary often gets dismissed as ‘boring’ or ‘vanilla,’ but this view overlooks the profound intimacy and intensity it can offer; eye contact, passionate kissing, the sweat of your partner drip onto your chin – these moments aren’t for the faint of heart,” said Zachary Zane, Grindr’s new sex and relationships expert. “Many believe such intimacy can only be found with someone they're involved with, but you can experience deep sexual connection with someone you only meet once, even if it lasts just ten minutes, even if you don’t know their name. Missionary can lead to a powerful shared sexual experience, to a level of intimacy you just don't get with other positions.”

Other key takeaways from 2024 include:

  • Best Read: “Bleach blonde bad built butch body” – Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (the roast that shook group chats around the world)
  • Gay Power Couple: Sarah Paulson & Holland Taylor (#goals)
  • Gayest Gayborhood: Soho, London (where every pub feels like home and every corner is a party)
  • Gay Gasp of the Year: Anthony Ammirati, French Pole Vaulter (because who knew pole vaulting could be so… dynamic?)
  • Best Viral Newcummer: Jools Lebron (serving demurely, mindfully)
  • Best Queer Kiss: Charlie and Nick, Heartstopper (proof that representation and tenderness can still make us swoon)
  • Hate Watch of the Year: Emily in Paris (we love to hate it and hate that we love it)
  • Best Viral Moment: Grindr Notification Sound at Eurovision (an accidental yet iconic cameo that had audiences gagging – and laughing)
  • Biggest Foot Fetish: Italy (second year running – literally)

“Each year, UNWRAPPED is our love letter to the queer community,” says Tristan Pineiro, Grindr’s SVP of Brand Marketing and Communications. “It’s our way of celebrating the voices and moments that make our community so vibrant while honoring the trends and perspectives that unite us globally.”

Whether it’s a cheeky nod to missionary’s comeback, Soho’s coronation as the Gayest Gayborhood, or Anthony Ammirati’s dynamic pole work, Grindr UNWRAPPED 2024 shines a light on the voices and moments that defined the culture this year.
