Tirtyl’s Next-Gen Wrappers

Queensland, September 7, 2021. Tirtyl are an Australian company based in Queensland, who have revolutionised the hand soap industry with their ‘just add water’ soap tablets. Their soap tablets are affordable, eco-friendly and more gentle on the hands than the hand soaps found in the supermarkets. Tirtyl’s mission is to deliver products that are ‘made to unwaste’, and their range of foaming hand soap tablets do just that. Their products have taken the Australian and American markets by storm.

In April of this year, Tirtyl introduced their new soap tablet wrappers which are plastic-free and TUV certified home compostable. The wrappers are made from sustainable kraft paper and a special type of polylactic acid (PLA) which is water-resistant like plastic, but is really made from plants like sugarcane, tapioca and corn. The next-gen compostable wrapping is proudly made in Queensland, Australia.

Their ‘home compostable’ wrappers ensure that their customers can dispose of the wrappers at home rather than an industrial composting facility (of which there are only 150 in Australia and 185 in the United States). Everything in a home compostable wrapper (including ink and glue) will compost within 12-24 months in a home composting set-up (depending on the weather). If Tirtyl’s customers don’t have a home or community composting system, the wrappers should go into a ‘general waste’ bin where they will gradually decompose in a landfill.

Plastic is so widely-used across companies because it’s cheap and has high-performing shelf-life qualities. Tirtyl’s new wrappers cost 11x the price of a plastic wrapper, not including the investment in Research and Development. They also have a much shorter shelf-life than plastic does (12 months). Tirtyl spent a substantial amount of time experimenting and refining the wrappers so that they would be moisture proof and maintain the shelf-life of the product.

Tirtyl are 100% committed to their mission of making conscious consumption mainstream, and continue to work closely with Australian scientists and industrial engineers to develop even better wrappers for their soap tablets. Their goal is to increase the shelf-life to greater than 2 years. It’s a challenging task, but Tirtyl believes it is worth it due to the benefits it will have on their company, their customers and the planet.
