National Preparedness Month and Resources for Businesses and Institutions to Respond to Natural Disasters and Emergencies

By: WebWire

In 2004, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designated September as National Preparedness Month (NPM). The annual event encourages people across the United States to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, institutions, and communities. The theme for this year's NPM is A Lasting Legacy.

Businesses and institutions should have a plan in place and know the resources they can call upon to respond to natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, and earthquakes. Other emergencies they could face and need to be prepared for include pandemics, human-caused hazards like accidents and acts of violence, and even technology-related events like power outages and equipment failures.

“Up to 40% of businesses affected by a natural or human-caused disaster do not reopen according to Ready.gov,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “This is why it is so critical to be prepared and have plans in place. A key component to being prepared is having access to resources and professionals that can inspect, test, monitor, and develop solutions for environmental, health, and safety issues.”

CTSI provides a wide range of these services. These include identifying and mitigating potential hazards that may occur in the event of a disaster, both indoors and outdoors. Their expertise with industrial hygiene, environmental, safety, and infection control services for biological, chemical, and physical threats and hazards can all be essential during an emergency or disaster. In addition, CTSI offers comprehensive facility-wide safety and health programs, regulatory compliance assessments and management training, personal protective equipment and safety training, and many other services.
