Scalp micropigmentation has vastly become the world’s leading hair loss solution for people of all ages and genders. People all over the world are jumping at the opportunity to receive this life-changing procedure. With such a highly sort out treatment, it is evident that it has many advantages, but everything that has advantages must come with some form of disadvantages. In this article, I am going to tell you the pros and cons of scalp micropigmentation. Not all the treatments are for everyone, no matter how popular they are.

Pros
  • Recreate your hairline – One specific part of scalp micropigmentation that is so life-changing is the fact that your hairline can be restored entirely. This procedure will make your hairline look completely natural. Although your natural hairline has receded, your new hairline will make you feel like a brand-new person.
  • Immediate results – Scalp micropigmentation treatment always needs multiple sessions to get the look perfect. But lucky for you, after your first session, you will notice instant results; these results will not be as you desire straight away, but it’s part of the road to get you there.
  • Cheaper than a hair transplant – The price of scalp micropigmentation treatment will depend on how big the area on the scalp is that needs treating. But no matter how much of the scalp needs treating, treatment is drastically cheaper than a hair transplant.
  • Covers hair transplant scars – When you receive a hair transplant, you have to have an area of your scalp with active hair follicles (called the donor area). Some of these are then removed and placed into the balding area of the scalp. The donor area of the scalp will then have either a strip scar if you have had Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) or individual small circular scars if you have Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). By using the scalp micropigmentation procedure, these scars can be camouflaged by as much as 95%, making them unnoticeable to those unaware of the scarring in the first place.
  • Can restore health to the injured skin – The scalp micropigmentation process can help restore health to scarring during the skin-pricking process; your skin produces more collagen to heal the minor wounds from the needles. The theory is that new collagen formed will help smooth out your skin’s appearance, helping to fill scars and restore some health.
  • Relatively painless – Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, and due to this, we cannot guarantee your pain threshold. Most people who have experienced scalp micropigmentation have either had no pain at all or described it as a little uncomfortable. Scalp micropigmentation is definitely less painful than traditional tattoos. Also, numbing cream is usually used to help make the discomfort as minimal as possible.
  • Look of stubble – By implanting thousands of microdots of pigment into the scalp, we are replicating the look of natural hair follicles; this gives the scalp the look of a full head of shaved hair that leaves the look of stubble.
  • Makes hair appear thicker – Many people suffer from diffused thinning and find this difficult to disguise. With scalp micropigmentation, we deposit pigment between the existing hairs, reducing the contrast between the skin and making it appear thicker and fuller, concealing the look of thinning hair.
  • Camouflages patched hair loss – Some conditions such as alopecia areata cause patched hair loss; this is where coin-sized patches of hair fall out, leaving a small bald patch. This can be camouflaged with microdots of pigment, making the bald patched unnoticeable.
  • Safe, non-surgical, and non-invasive – Scalp micropigmentation is also known as a scalp or hair tattoo. The procedure is almost the same as a traditional tattoo; pigment is implanted into the skin to create an image. This is entirely non-surgical, and although the needle breaks the skin, there are so many precautions and risk assessments that it is doubtful anything will go wrong.
  • Natural and holistic – The pigment used for scalp micropigmentation is most commonly made from natural components such as carbon. The whole procedure is created to help someone feel better about themselves and boost their confidence.
  • No downtime – Due to the procedure being non-invasive, no downtime is required; the skin will heal naturally on its own, and although you may experience slight redness and some scabbing, the area will be healed after around ten days. You can go back to your regular daily routine as soon as you walk out of the studio/clinic.
  • Artists are trained specialists – There are many incredible scalp micropigmentation trainers around the world. This treatment requires specialized training for each individual service, such as total hair loss, diffused thinning, and scalp scarring. There are many things that the artists will need to learn about to ensure they always give their clients the best possible service.
Cons
  • Aversion to UV (ultraviolet) light – Like traditional tattooing, ultraviolet light also makes scalp micropigmentation fade, and UV is tough to avoid as the sun creates ultraviolet rays. A little sun will not cause too much damage, but if you are under ultraviolet rays for an extended period, you will undoubtedly experience premature fading.
  • Minimal pain – Although scalp micropigmentation clients only really describe the pain as minimal, pain is still pain. The procedure can still be painful with or without numbing cream, depending on your pain threshold.
  • A lack of regulations required – Due to scalp micropigmentation lacking regulations, any artist trained in tattooing can legally perform the procedure. Although it is similar to tattooing, many attributes make it very different, such as the depth in which the pigment is implanted and the pigment itself. Without the correct knowledge and training, you will likely end up with a botched job rather than a realistic natural-looking head of shaved hair.
  • Have to keep your head shaved – As the procedure creates an image on the scalp and only replicates hair follicles (if you are experiencing hair loss rather than thinning), you will have to keep your head completely shaved for the treatment to have its realistic look. If the hair grew in the areas with active follicles but not in other areas (usually the hairline or crown), It would be easy to see you have had scalp micropigmentation and make you seem like you have had a very unusual haircut.
  • Potential side effects – even though scalp micropigmentation is non-invasive, the process still involves breaking the skin, which adds the risk of infection and other side effects.
  • Fading – Like permanent makeup, pigment stays in the skin forever, although, over time, the color in the pigment begins to fade, leading to it not looking as perfect as it did after the initial treatment and causing you to need touch-ups.
  • Fixed look – The final look we achieve with scalp micropigmentation is the result, and that is that. The only way to change the result is by getting the pigment removed with some form of tattoo removal treatment.
  • 2D – Although scalp micropigmentation mimics the look of natural hair follicles that are three-dimensional, it is only an image and will only ever be two-dimensional.
  • Unaware of long-term results – As the procedure has not been around for an extended time, we are unaware of the long-term results of scalp micropigmentation. We can speculate, but in the end, no one can be entirely sure.

Everyone is different, everyone’s hair is different, and everyone’s idea of how they want their hair to look is different. If you need a hair restoration procedure that looks incredible, has guaranteed results, and is non-invasive, then scalp micropigmentation treatment is for you. With the pros and cons of scalp micropigmentation, the pros definitely outweigh the cons.
