There Are Five DevOps Security Challenges to Be Aware of, According to Protera

Leading software managed service provider, Protera, has recently released a guide detailing the five security challenges to watch out for, such as development speed and process integration.

Westchester,United States - December 14, 2022 /PressCable/

Protera, the premiere software managed service provider, has released a guide that sheds light on the most commonly experienced DevOps security challenges.

With the guide, the company aims to help IT leaders build a confident cloud security posture.

Even though the Agile methodology in DevOps helps businesses integrate and streamline the development and operations process, it leads to an uptick in security risks.

Case in point: In 2022, the average number of cyberattacks and data breaches soared by a staggering 42% compared to 2021.

“While advancements in the software development process have led to unprecedented innovation and transformed the way development teams contribute to overall strategy, they’ve also created new risks that IT security teams must continually address to avoid adverse security events,” explains a spokesperson from Protera.

DevOps enables developers to deliver software at high velocity. However, fast-moving development cycles can lead to bugs and coding errors that the security team must track down and mitigate before deploying the system. For security teams accustomed to conducting a once-over assessment before system provisioning, a process that requires early security checks may give rise to cultural resistance, explains Protera.

In addition, to build a single pipeline that ensures associated teams work in sync, DevOps enables cross-departmental collaboration between a company’s operations and development teams. Assuming that these teams are more used to working in a siloed culture, unifying their processes can be challenging. On top of this, undefined roles and policies can lead to security gaps.

According to Protera, the interconnectedness of the DevOps process ensures the seamless exchange of privileged information among teams. However, it requires teams to efficiently curate a highly sophisticated security strategy to oversee the complex components of the software development lifecycle (SDLC).

By helping DevOps teams attain resilience and higher scalability, workload containerisation has become increasingly ubiquitous in cloud-native environments. However, the added complexity of the underlying engine, networking, and orchestration with containerisation means more potential attack vectors that need to be continuously scanned and secured, explains Protera.

According to the company, the rising trend of migrating workloads to cloud-native environments among businesses exacerbates the security issues coming with DevOps-first culture. A serverless computing environment, having a wider attack surface and no well-defined network perimeter, can result in security risks, disruption of business operations, compromise of sensitive data, and more.

Protera stresses the importance of implementing a full DevSecOps model in securing a DevOps environment.

By shifting security and integrating security measures into each step of the SDLC, a high-end DevSecOps model helps enterprises scale development while reducing remedial tasks.

For example, with its integrated SecOps model, Protera ensures strengthening and augmenting the security posture of an enterprise. Plus, it develops a security baseline for comprehensive governance and reporting, the company says.

On top of this, as a key strategic partner, Protera maintains uninterrupted communication with stakeholders and board members to help enterprises stay on top of security risks.

To quote a client, “Protera is the best at listening to where we are and what we’re trying to do. They react quickly and continue to send the right message to us that we’re aligned with a great partner.”
