By: Get News

Wilmington, North Carolina Headquartered geospatial solutions firm Geo Owl, was awarded a statewide contract for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Services from the state of North Carolina. The contract enables the State to leverage Geo Owl’s more than decade of experience in the Military and National Security space to better empower and enrich city and state government entities with state-of-the-art GIS Technology and Services. The North Carolina statewide contract includes one base year and three optional renewal years and was awarded by the Department of Information Technology.

According to their CEO Nick Smith “We are excited to bring the same mission first ethos that we have provided to the Special Operations and Intelligence Community, to support vital and necessary GIS projects at State and City Governments in North Carolina, our home for the last decade. We’ve built a one-of-a-kind Geospatial engine capable of supporting a large range of needs from elite operations across the globe, to helping our neighbors across the street. The state can now rely on our Geospatial Center of Excellence to supercharge their projects and support citizens with award winning services.”

What exactly are Geographic Information Systems (GIS)?

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are a technology used to store, access, and analyze spatial or location data and are often used by governments to provide and optimize services to citizens. According to Geo Owl’s Director of Geospatial Solutions Steve Stout “Governments and people leverage GIS every day. The maps we use on our phones, like Google Maps and Waze, use a GIS to help optimize the routes we drive. Cities and States use the same technology to assist with trash pickup, school site planning, parcel mapping, public safety, and loads of other vital government services we all rely upon.” Steve recently appeared on a GIS Podcast and provided more information on how GIS is used across the board.
